This course is an in-depth study of the history and theology of the Patristic and the Medieval Church. Special attention is given to the formulation of the doctrines of the Trinity and of the person of Christ, the development of monasticism and
approaches to Christian spirituality, and dissenting movements leading up to the Reformation.

Learning Outcomes
  • Describe, with a basic understanding, the key events and issues in the history of the Patristic and Medieval Church.

  • Examine primary sources with an historiographical mindset.

  • Understand the process by which theological formulation develops.

  • Develop an awareness and appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of the Patristic and Medieval Church as she sought to interact with her political and cultural context.

  • Critically assess Patristic and Medieval approaches to Christian piety, finding positive and negative examples for personal spiritual formation.

  • Assess the rise and influence of dissenting movements prior to the Reformation.
