This course lays foundations for Christian Ethics, moving from an introduction to schools of ethics to an overview of biblical ethics, then developing an integrative ethical framework, and finally considering the application of that framework to ethical issues.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of completing this course the student should be able to:
Understand and explain the major schools of ethics and how they operate in ethical decision making in contemporary culture.
Form and defend a view on the basis for Christian ethics and especially the role of general and special revelation in Christian ethical thinking.
Appreciate the ethical teachings of different parts of the Bible with due attention to differences of genre.
Develop and articulate an understanding of how the Bible functions as a whole in Christian ethical thinking and decision making.
Evaluate the place of ethics in a wider Christian theological perspective and especially its relationship to the gospel and to mission.
Engage thoughtfully and compassionately from a Christian perspective in complex ethical issues and debates.
Apply consistently biblical ethical principles to decisions in their own life and in pastoral advice to others.
